SUMMARY:Geoethics at the 11th IAG International Conference on Geomorphology
DESCRIPTION:Session „Geoethics and Geomorphology“\nConveners:\nMatthew Hughes (University of Canterbury\, Christchurch\, New Zealand)\, Silvia Peppoloni (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia\, Rome\, Italy)\, Giuseppe Di Capua (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia\, Rome\, Italy). \nSession description:\nGeoethics consists of research and reflection on the values which underpin appropriate behaviours and practices\, wherever human activities interact with the Earth system; geoethics also provides a framework for integrating the physical and social sciences and addressing societal issues including those with often-competing values over natural resources\, development and landscapes. Geomorphologists work to address many of the environmental challenges of our time\, challenges with significant societal implications\, and geomorphological systems present abundant opportunities to explore convergences between pure and applied science\, the practices of scientists\, and how scientific understandings inform society. This session invites contributions that specifically address geoethical concepts and issues within geomorphology. \nInformation about the abstract submission is available at: https://www.confer.co.nz/icg2026/call-for-abstracts/ \nThe deadline for abstract submission is:  13 June 2025 \nConference website:\nhttps://www.confer.co.nz/icg2026/ \nThis session is co-sponsored by:\nIAPG – International Association for Promoting Geoethics\nIUGS Commission on Geoethics\nCIPSH Chair on Geoethics

SUMMARY:GSL course on geoethics
DESCRIPTION:Course organized by the Geological Society on London titled: „Online Training: Exploring Geoethics: Ethics of Responsibility Towards the Earth System„. \nThe course will be held virtually over four days\, with each module lasting two hours\, on 1 October\, 8 October\, 15 October\, and 22 October 2025\, starting at 16:00 GMT/BST and ending at approximately 18:00 GMT/BST. \nThis course aims to illustrate the theoretical foundations of geoethics\, providing the categories\, principles and values that underlie its conceptual framework. \nThe course will start discussing the definition of geoethics and after an excursus on the roots of geoethical thought and on the development of geoethics\, the structure of geoethics will be described with references to environmental ethics. In particular\, the fundamental and aspirational principles of geoethics\, its relational domains\, the reference values for each domain\, its main characteristics will be discussed. \nThe course will then move on to address the application of geoethical thinking to important questions related to geosciences. \nThe course will be organised in modules. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Geoethics at the IAG Regional Conference on Geomorphology
DESCRIPTION:International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG)Regional Conference on Geomorphology \nIAPG is partner of this event. \nSession TS22. GEOETHICS IN GEOMORPHOLOGY\n(jointly organized by IAPG – International Association for Promoting Geoethics and IAG – International Association of Geomorphologists) \nChairpersons: Elizabeth Rovere (DraElizabethRovere@gmail.com)\, Andrea Coronato (andrea.coronato@gmail.com) \nSession description:Geomorphology\, as a discipline focused on the study of landscape processes and formation\, has a direct impact on both the environment and human societies\, and this was not always addressed from an ethical perspective\, leading to sustainability and social justice challenges. This session aims to bring together all those interested in exploring the intersection of geomorphology and geoethics\, discussing how scientific and technical decisions in the study of geographic landscapes should be informed by ethical principles that consider both environmental and social impacts. Furthermore\, the session seeks to raise awareness about the ethical responsibility in geomorphological research and its application in decision-making that affects ecosystems and communities. \nDownload the call and additional information (pdf file) \nFurther information on the session and the submission of abstracts on the Conference website: \nhttps://rcg2025.geomorphology.ro/programme/thematic-sessions/

SUMMARY:Geoethics Aotearoa New Zealand Seminar Series: Weaving Indigenous knowledge and science – A journey
DESCRIPTION:In this inaugural presentation of the Geoethics Aotearoa New Zealand Seminar Series\, Associate Professor Dan Hikuroa will recount his inspirational journey from a conventional training in geoscience to a career in which he weaves Indigenous knowledge and science to spearhead alternative ways of undertaking development and assessing sustainability. Dan will describe formative periods in his journey\, and highlight vital lessons for geoscientists wishing to engage successfully with Indigenous communities. \nGeoethics Aotearoa New Zealand Seminar Series is a student-led initiative that will explore themes under the banner of geoethics. The inaugural webinar is on 12 June 2025. \nThis series is organized by IAPG-New Zealand/GSNZ Geoethics Special Interest Group (Coordinator: Matthew Hughes) and is hosted under the auspices of the Geoscience Society of New Zealand (GSNZ). \nPlease register here:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/-mGCGJ8mS3SQpoTHa5WeOQ#/registration \nDownload the poster of this seminar series (pdf) \nDan Hikuroa (Ngāti Maniapoto\, Ngaati Whanaunga\, Ngāti Mahuta\, Pākehā) is a father\, surfer\, paddle-boarder\, gardener\, loves the taiao and is an Associate Professor in Māori Studies\, Waipapa Taumata Rau-University of Auckland. Dan is an established world expert on weaving indigenous knowledge and science to realise the dreams of the communities he works with. Dan has been spearheading alternative ways of undertaking development and assessing sustainability\, including braiding indigenous knowledge and epistemologies with science and into policies\, assessment frameworks and decision-support tools. Dan is UNESCO New Zealand Commissioner for Culture\, member of Pou Herenga\, Māori Advisory to the Climate Change Commission\, has key roles within New Zealand’s Centres of Research Excellence\, advises national and regional government\, communities and philanthropic trusts\, member of several significant international research teams and formerly AGU Council. He is member of Ngā Ara Whetū\, Te Pūtahi o Pūtaiao and Te Ao Mārama\, Research Centres at Waipapa Taumata Rau -University of Auckland. \nWebsite of IAPG-NZ/Geoethics Special Interest Group within GSNZ
